Choosing the right Apple laptop

By

The Take

Now, can you confidently say that “I’m a Mac”? Buying a Apple laptop is very confusing  because you may think that everyone of their laptops are simply divine. I would agree, but of course there are also those Apple-haters out there, who gather around in their basements and post on every website they can find about how much they hate Apple. Shame on you.

After owning every one of these brilliant computers, I can’t really persuade you to buy one, I’m not a Apple store guru or anything. Keep in mind that they all come with iLife, and the latest version of Snow Leopard, the operating system for Mac. There are three types of Apple laptops, the Macbook, Macbook Pro, and the Macbook Air. Each has its own pros and cons, so on to the nitty-gritty shall we?

The Macbook

The lower end of Apple’s laptops, this computer can be seen at many educational facilities. Just because it is at the lower end, doesn’t mean that it isn’t packed with the best of technology. Packing a built-in 7 hour battery, (for those long long flights) Intel Core 2 Duo processor, a brilliantly LED-backlit display, and a built in camera that you can use for conferences, you literally get what you pay for. Of course, you also get a battery that can be used over 1,000 charges, a multi-touch trackpad, and with iphoto, imovie, and Garageband, your entertainment won’t be far away. This one will set you back beginning at $999.00. What more would you want from a everyday laptop?

The Macbook: My take

This laptop is a great laptop for school purposes, fast, reliable, and highly portable. The fact that it is light was a plus for traveling. One of the things I did not like is that it was not as sturdy as I thought it was. The tips of the part where the screen and the plastic merged would chip off, while the back of the screen would be prone to scratches.

The Macbook Pro

Now on to the next one. Bum bum bum. The macbook pro, just like it’s less advanced cousin, is light, slick, and  also very portable. This guy is actually made out of aluminum, something called aluminum body enclosure. Translated into normal people talk, it means that the whole outer body of the Macbook Pro is actually one piece of solid aluminum. It’s lighter, sturdier, and more stylish. Available in three different sizes, the 13-inch, 15, and 17-inch. These also feature a Intel Core 2 Duo processor, a glass-track pad for those multi-touch movements, a i-sight camera and a NVIDIA GeForce 94000M graphic processor chip. So what does that mean? It gives you enough oomph to do even the most graphically intense jobs. This amazing thing comes with a big price though: it starts at $1,199.00.

The Macbook Pro: My take

The Macbook Pro is very different from the Macbook in many ways. First, it’s even better in intense workloads with multiple applications open. This I thought was very useful in gaming and when I was editing with some video. I also noticed a first thought that everyone had: “That’s a very sexy computer.”

The Macbook Air

This laptop was getting a lot of people crazy over it on debut day. Like the Macbook Pro, it is also made totally out of aluminum, giving you maximum protection of your hardware while also being considerably lighter than if it were made of several different pieces. Also with a Intel Core 2 Duo processor and built in camera, you have most of the flash while considerably being lighter. How light you may ask?  3 pounds and less than a inch in width, it can go virtually anywhere tucked underneath your folder. This one will literally blow you back with a starting price of  $1,499.00.

The Macbook Air: My take

Although it is as stylish and cool as the Macbook Pro, it doesn’t pack as much kapow inside. Why? Apple has cut a lot of the strength and performance to make this thing light. It also doesn’t have a drive to burn and watch/listen DVD’s/CD’s, so keep in mind that you are losing that ability too. (You will need to buy the SuperDrive for Macbook Air.) Although very light, I found that it wasn’t as fragile as I thought it would. Dropped a few times, yet still OK. If you are willing to take in a strangers opinion, DO NOT BUY THIS LAPTOP. Yes it may be as light as air, but sacrificing key performance just to buy a lighter laptop while paying more is just absurd.

Tips on purchasing

Because Apple does not frequently release new products, take into account that these laptops and other Apple products will be re-innovated and redesigned at least once a year. There’s nothing more disappointing when you buy a laptop and then a new, better version of it comes out afterward. Can’t decide which Apple laptop to buy? Here’s a little info for which laptop may best fit you.

Macbook- For educational, everyday use, and is best suited for low to medium workloads. Perfect for some entertainment on the go also.

Macbook Pro- For professional, multipurpose use, perfect for multi-tasking, high intensity workloads and handling high-graphics.

Macbook Air- For the professional who is willing to let go of some performance for a lighter laptop. light as ‘air’ and can be used for intense workloads.
